Fond du Lac, Wis. – April 11, 2016 – The Fondy Fire Robotics team has advanced to the FIRST® Robotics Championship. This annual event features 600 teams from around the world and will take place at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo., April 27 – 30. The team recently participated in the Minnesota North Star Regional competition on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where they earned the Engineering Inspiration Award, providing the team with an automatic entry into the Championship. The award recognizes outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school and community.
During the two-day competition, Fondy Fire Team 2194 along with alliance captains Wave Robotics Team 2826 from Oshkosh, Wis., and alliance partners RoboHuskie Team 2574 from St. Anthony Village, Minn., also earned the Finalist Award by taking second place in the competition that featured 60 teams from the upper Midwest. This year’s FIRST Robotics Competition, known as FIRST Stronghold, features two alliances of three robots each on a quest to breach their opponents’ fortifications, weaken their tower with boulders, and capture the opposing tower. It is a game where a medieval theme meets hightech competition.
As Fondy Fire Robotics prepares for the Championship, Lead Mentor Mark Holschuh said, “I’m so proud of the students and mentors for what they have accomplished this season. This is the first time that we have been recognized with the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award and I think it truly reflects the talented group of individuals we have on this team and the many hours of hard work to achieve this success.” By winning the award, NASA will pay the team’s entry fee to the Championship event. Holschuh added, “I also want to extend our sincere appreciation to Wave Robotics for their friendship and support of our team. They truly embody the FIRST ideals and we’re very fortunate to have had the opportunity to share their practice field and obtain assistance from their team. It sure was a lot of fun to compete with them as part of their alliance at the North Star Regional.”
The North Star Regional judges showed a great deal of interest in Fondy Fire’s robot design. Ethan Weber, a senior from New Holstein High School, added, “we worked extremely hard on the design of our robot and it features some amazing technology. I’m very grateful that the judges recognized the advancements that we have been able to achieve.” This fall, Weber will be attending either the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) or Stanford University, and is the drive team leader for Fondy Fire.
The students and mentors from Fondy Fire were called down onto the field to be recognized for the two awards in the traditional FIRST celebration that features thousands of people clapping to the beat of music and high-fives from the judges. Abby Schuett, a junior at Fond du Lac High School said, “having a chance to run down onto the field and celebrate with my team was a fantastic experience.” She added, “we have all worked so hard to have a chance to compete with the best teams in the world and I can’t wait to get to the Championship.”
